Things to do in New York - St. Patrick’s Cathedral


St. Patrick’s Cathedral is a massive 13th-century-styleGothic Catholic cathedral placed on Madison Avenue. The Cathedral is one the of largests ones of its kind in the whole United States and has been recognized throughout its history as a pre-eminent center of Catholic life in this country. It was begun in 1858 by Archbishop John Hughes. The buliding is famous for its graceful twin spires that go 330 feet into the sky as well as combined pipe organ having 12 divisions, 150 ranks, 177 stops and over 9,000 pipes. In terms of localization it faces Rockefeller Center and because of its style cannot ideally suit the modern architecture of the city but occasionally serves as good background for movies. (It appeared on the movie Spider-Man, when Spider-Man saves Mary Jane). It is visited by over five and a half million of visitors each year that arrive to pray and contemplate God in this place of peace and tranquility.
