Things to do in Chicago - Museum of Contemporary Art
Situated at 237 East Ontario, The Museum of Contemporary Art was founded in this former location in 1967. Originally, the establishment intended to promote temporary art, but over time it was decided to display contemporary art objects created after 1945 as well. Currently, the museum can be regarded as one of the nation’s largest facilities gathering in its collection 2,345 pieces with the emphasis on minimalism, surrealism and conceptual photography. The museum is a regular host of solo exhibitions of prominent artists. The first exhibitions of artists Antoni Tapies (1977) and Frida Kahlo (1978) took place here. Within the building’s area, apart from the exhibitions, one can find facilities such as a bookstore, gift store, restaurant, 300-seat theater and a terraced sculpture garden with an impressive view of Lake Michigan. As there are many events like workshops, lectures and classes going on all the time every visitor should be able to find something suitable for him/her. If you become a MCA member you will receive a discount on participation fees. The museum possesses rest room, elevators and wheelchair-accessible entrances.
